Start eating meat responsibly with Modern Carnivore.

According to NPR a newly released study by the U.S. Department of Health indicates the world would be much better off if people became vegans. While the interpretations of the guidelines vary, as you can imagine this is set to be a wonderful political football with special interest groups coming out of the woodwork. The argument for vegan-ism is one that I’ve heard for many years and was actually the impetus for starting Modern Carnivore. The reality is that lean meat in the form of grass-fed beef and venison or fowl you can hunt in the wild are some of the best options for a healthy diet. What do you think? 1. Hey Mark, I’d have to look at the report in detail, I had kind of forgotten about it. Looking at the nutritional evidence I’ve seen, I personally have no doubt that lots of fresh fruits and vegetables are a good idea for you, but veganism is terrible for you and not always good for the environment. Some landscapes shouldn’t be farmed, but animals that we can eat can live there and provide us good nutrition. A better outcome in that situation. But, in other landscapes and even personal biological makeup, less meat and more plant focused eating and cultivation might be desirable. I think the full context has to be looked at in each situation, rather than a broad-brush rule.

I think we’re in agreement Erik. Fruits and veggies are an important part of a healthy diet. You can’t beat the nutritional benefits of these fresh foods. That said, there are few, if any, meat alternatives that are as effective in delivering protein, B12, B3 (Niacin), B6, iron, zinc, selenium as meat. It’s also been found that wild meat like venison contains more “healthy fats” than the other red meat alternatives you find in the butcher case. As Americans we definitely consume too many calories each day, and too much meat. The Modern Carnivore position is to reduce the volume, and increase the quality. Quality comes from wild animals, and responsible farmers/ranchers.
